The Sequence Technique

What about problems that are not getting resolution after many visits? Nearly 3 decades of using The Sequence Technique have shown that it typically resolves these more stubborn cases.

When you go for treatment, misaligned bones are found and are adjusted back into place. What if, after several sessions, you have made little to no progress, even though the same adjustments are performed at each visit?
The Sequence Technique asks, "Why is the bone out of place?" This changes both the analysis and delivers many additional, orderly steps in the treatment sequence. It uses methods that seem to have disappeared from the chiropractic knowledge base.

The theory of The Sequence is that, under conditions of injury, stress and toxicity, the body appears to lock itself down as a means of protecting the brain and spinal cord. It can be thought of a defensive software program. You can tell that you have this software program running if you have any or all of the following problems:

  • chronically tight neck muscles that don't get lasting relief with massage

  • reduced range of motion in the neck

  • disc problems in neck, often with pain into shoulders and sometimes tingling or numbness down the arm

  • teeth grinding, jaw clenching, using a dental bite guard

  • lower back pain, pain in the hips and/or pain down down the sides of the leg(s)

  • reduced low back flexibility

  • lower back disc problems, typically with pain radiating down the leg

  • 1 leg is shorter than the other, often noticeable when wearing pants. Note: it is extremely rare that a heel lift is needed.

  • knee pain

  • tight or painful Achilles tendon on one side

These symptoms are evidence that the body is still locked down in defense. In the brain and spine, these lockdown places occur where cerebro-spinal fluid needs to get pumped. Reducing the flow of cerebro-spinal fluid is bad for health since it delivers a meal and a bath to tissues of the brain and spinal cord.

The sequence of corrections starts at the cranium where the body's computer is and goes through many more organized, sequential steps. This unwinding process has worked exceptionally well on many people over many years.

Muscles participate in this automatic lockdown program. That's why they are chronically tight. Massage tends to bounce off as do other therapies. Muscles become so tight that they reduce blood flow, and that causes muscle pain. Pain in muscles is an alarm system. After The Sequence Technique turns off the defensive software, then the muscles will greatly benefit from deep-tissue work to soften them and allow for full blood flow. That will turn off the muscle pain. Much of this work can be done at home for free.

In addition to quality nutrition, muscles need compression and stretching. If a young person has had a problem for a short while, the muscles will correct quickly with this method. If the problem is long term, such as with an older person, it takes longer to unwind the muscles.

The Sequence was added to over several decades by noteworthy DCs. Major DeJarnette, DO, DC, in the 1930s gave our profession the sacral occipital technique (SOT), including the 3 pelvic categories; George Goodheart, DC, developed applied kinesiology (AK) in the 1960s and its muscle testing methods; Carl Ferreri, DC, developed the sequenced cranial, TMJ, pelvic and cervical corrections; James Cox, DC, gave us a traction table; deep tissue massage has come from massage therapy.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET WELL?

6 pieces of the complex puzzle of health

1. Cranial/TMJ/Pelvic/Cervical corrections done in sequence

2. Muscle Work: Pain is a chemistry produced by the nervous system in response to lack of blood supply. Compressing and stretching muscles need to be done deeply and regularly, especially as we age. Lightly rubbing the muscles is of little benefit when there is real pain.

3. Chiropractic Adjustments - Moving the bones back into correct alignment.

4. Traction: Traction requires a special table for stretching, disc problems, sciatica, stenosis and others. Traction is best done after the body's compression program is shut down. Otherwise, the traction table is pulling apart while the body is pulling together. Research from Dr. Cox has shown that traction opens the lumbar nerve-root ports 28%. (This is where nerves exit the spine between each vertebrae.) Pressure on these nerves roots can create local and radiating pain. Traction can free trapped nerves and help restore blood flow to reduce pain. It is also very interesting to note how many pelvic-organ problems are caused or made worse by compression of lumbar nerve roots, also research from Dr. Cox.

5. Blood-chemistry Nutrition: This is an enormous area for health problems. Lab testing can identify problems that can often be helped with support from better food quality and targeted nutritional supplements that come right off the blood work. Best results occur when customers do their part. Sensible exercise is a benefit. Standard blood chemistry at my clinic is ~75 line items. Hormone testing is also valuable because it dovetails with the chemistry.

6. Other Alternatives: There are other alternatives that help. Each has its own unique capabilities and include: additional lab testing, acupuncture, dry needling, reflexology, physical therapy, homeopathy and colon hydrotherapy.
